Dear Yakimaniac sir,
Thank you for"Word of the Day" and for faithfully archiving the ancient writings of SC. When I was little I remember my Swedish Grandfather, Carl Larson (I kid you not)for whom english was his second language, used to make a list of unfamiliar words from the Sunday newspaper. Then he would vow to converse with them throughout the week. He would accomplish this ritual as long as I can remember. When I was a teen I checked out his list once and it included among its' ten words, sadism, sado masochism, tawdry, debauch and taboo. It did my heart good to know that my beloved Swedish Grandfather, had gone this long without adding these vile terms to his daily lingo.(well maybe not so much taboo)I thought about losing his list for him, but after all he was 70 something, and had a right to increase his vocabulary any way he pleased ,so I did nothing. He may have learned some new english, but he never worked it into a conversation.
I'm hopeful that my memories of my Swedish Grandfather, have not become overly chimerical.
Very truly, SYS

Welcome Sys of SMan. I'm trying to remember what state you are in. The YB of the SC told me all these inter-relationships but I have forgotten. Anyway, thank you for your kind post.

I am wondering what the Swedish word is for debauch. My Swedish to English translator says "få någon att leva ett moraliskt dåligt liv" is the transitive form. If I were to get my ashes hauled in Sweden I think I would need a simpler way to communicate.

Makes one appreciate English.

Dear Yakimaniac,
I'm the youngest sister of Dave, I met Mark and Anne in 1978 after their wedding. I have a remarkably similar school experience to Peter, Westmont to UCSB.I stayed in Santa Barbara after graduating for 20 years then moved to the Inland Empire. I suffered the same coastal withdrawals that Peter now describes.Does that remind you. My 18 year old daughter is the one that is stayin with Mark and Anne this summer during Ballet intensive.
I so enjoy your writing. Thank you.
