Music Makes the Heart Grow Fonder
Today I received a disc in the mail from my son. He is a junior at a prominent midWestern, wHolesomE, evAngelical, proTestant, christian cOllege Now. This disc contains over 80 songs of new music, most of it new to me. He knows how much I like alternative music and we had talked about it on the phone but I had forgotten about it. So it was a real treat to get the disc in the mail. A note was enclosed which let me know that most of the songs came from one of his friends who lives just down the hall.
This friend happens to be the son of the YB of the Smoking Christian. Now this in itself would be remarkable but near miraculous is the fact that the YB of the SC was my roommate and best friend at the same college nearly 30 years ago. Now this in itself is, as I said, near miraculous but clearly stupendous is the fact that the YB of the SC used to regularly turn me on to new music; really good music I might add. The kind of music that has stood the test of time. Groups like The Doors, Steely Dan, The Kinks, Procol Harem and artists like Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton and Gary Wright were on his list and were soon on mine as well.
I find it amazing that two college friends share music experiences in the same way their fathers did many years before. Certainly there was and is other cross-pollinating between these two families. Perhaps cars, clothes or careers were influenced. Maybe even the choice of spouses or the expression of faith. Who knows but maybe the Yakimaniac even has had some positive influence on the SC! Okay, well that was probably a stretch but I like to think that, at a minimum, some of the mud sticks to both walls.

Ooo, I want a copy of that disk. Who do I contact? Love your post. I am trying to get the SC to figure out how to put a link to your blog on his blog. I know how, but I think he needs to do it. Baby steps. Wife of the SC
It's late and I'm tired, but I had to add my comment about my being moved by your post today.
Thank you both for your comments.
It's an honor to have a posted comment from the Wife of the SC. All of us here at the Ashtray want to see the SC back on his feet again and we are thankful for your support and encouragement.
Happy to hear from the YB. Its been a while. We figured you were on a business trip or some other busy endeavor. I purposely left off the fact that the disc contained Madonna’s CD, Confessions On a Dance Floor. Frankly I’m baffled why the boys would be even remotely interested in a disco queen the age of their parents. Perhaps it’s the same reason that long hair, hip huggers, bell-bottoms and other 70s fashions are so hip again. Then again maybe it’s her muscle tone.
I personally think it's time the Wife of the SC started a blog.
the question is not 'why i would have madonna's new cd in my collection' it would most definately be 'why not divulge in the plethora of new music penetrating the dance floor rhythms of all of our hearts'
I see your point. Now where did I put my old Alice Cooper and Mega Death LPs?
Graham, I love "Hung Up" and I wasn't a Madonna fan back in the day. Good stuff. Can I order a copy?
Thanks YAK and VS, I would start a blog, but no one would laugh, so I'll hang out here with you guys! Back to packing. Wife of the SC
Whadda mean no one would laugh. Your last comments on the SC are laugh out loud funny! Extension cords? That's hilarious.
Perhaps the SC is getting all the funny stuff from his wife and blogging them as his own?
Wait. I think I'm commenting on the comments above AND comments on the SC. Could we get that link set up to make this easier on all of us?
Peter - when you get done with the extension cords, see if you can't figure it out.
Please, please dear God, do not let anyone start another blog about the Mooney family! I'm way confused with only two!
Nick, Have no fears, I couldn't agree with you more. In fact, I find one blog on the Mooneys over doing it, ask anyone.
Yak, Thnx for the comment, The SC has to set up that link himself, I have to put my foot down.
Wife of the SC
Dear Yakimaniac,
How I remember how YB used to love to introduce his new music to his friends in college. I remember the first time I met him. I was in The Girls apartment trying to...and he walked in with Todd L. and proceeded to help himself to the stereo. I don't remember the album. He would. But do you remember his Gino Vanelli stage?
Shilohman is referring to the album "Quadrophenia". As a freshman at Wheaton I had the audacity to walk into an upper classmen party, take control of the record player and have my way with everyone's musical experience...for all of 3 minutes, before Shilohman walked over to the record player and took the needle off of my album. It's amazing that he and I were ever able to become friends...but we did.
Welcome Shilohman, it's great to hear from you!
Yes I remember Gino Vanelli. His hair was to die for! As was his beautiful bemedaled chest. I have his Pauper in Paradise LP somewhere in the garage with the apparatus that plays it. Believe it or not GV is still recording and has a new 2006 CD.
One of my favorite memories of the YB and his music was the first time I crawled into the passenger seat of his Z and had to step over this large box on the floor, about the size of two shoeboxes side-by-each. He took off the lid and asked me to “pick one.” The box was full of cassette tapes. I handed him The Doors I think, he stuffed it into the player and we were off into the night and the Chicago suburbs.
“Well, I just got into town about an hour ago
Took a look around, see which way the wind blow
Where the little girls in their Hollywood bungalows”
Man I was all about this! The car, the music, the new best bud and unfettered youthful freedom. That was the beginning of many hours of “Going Mobile” and endless discussions about girls. We were like glue until he dumped me suddenly one day for a girl from Virginia.
Recent polls jointly conducted by the CMU & Psych Depts. indicate a growing obsession with all things Mooney. Not to be last to the table, President L. has authorized the WETN sponsorship of a new blog titled "Swoon with Moon, The Early Years." We will begin publishing unabridged transcriptions of that historic radio program and then move to streaming audio once alumni donations from the western states provide the necessary funding. M. Bartlebaugh, WETN Station Manager
I would also like a copy of that disc. Graham's sister has turned me on to lots of good music, but Graham nothing. And the the two SC-related blogs are now joined in holy blogrimony.
Welcome to our blog, J. Its become an All Things Mooney corner of cyberspace. Thanks for helping the SC with his links.
I was intrigued with your site (very cool Flash) and was making good progress working my way through your links. Then I visited Toyo Tires and got stalled. I am now rewriting my match.com profile to include:
Favorite Food
sushi
Hobbies
shopping, dancing, working out
Turn Ons
intelligence, warm blankets, mud, strong hands and the smell of vanilla
Turn Offs
bad breath, wet socks, animal cruelty
But what about wet, muddy blankets, that smell of animal cruelty?
That would be simply abominable and guarantee that no cute girls driving on Toyo tires would date me.
allow me to add to the what ever degree of seperation you ended up on...the lovely wife of yb of the sc used to date the yb of the yakimanic in college.
Welcome YB of the Yakimaniac! You've finally stumbled upon our little community of online silliness! Perhaps the YB of the SC will explain his "Toybox Theory" to our readers so they'll understand how it was that the girl dating the YB of the Yakimaniac ended up becoming the lovely wife of the YB of the SC. No one could make this stuff up.
Sincerely,
The Wife of the FOYB of the SC who is also the sister-in-law of the YB of the Yakimaniac
Very soon...I will dive back down to the lowest corner of PA and answer all the questions that have been laid before me by this site as well as the media. That is a promise.
